California school district getting 1,000 Asus Eee PCs

Asus Eee PC . I ordered a few of these three weeks ago so we could evaluate them in Highland. I am still waiting to get my mitts on them. RM cannot guarantee delivery until the middle of January, so I have ordered a couple of the higher spec machines as they have these in stock. From various reviews I have read around the blogsphere they seem capable little machines for schools. They could be a cheap way to provide easy access to GLOW. However I would like to pilot them in a class with real kids before we go any further with them. So it was interesting to read in Endgadget that the California’s Fresno Unified school district have bought 1000 of them to give to students

California school district getting 1,000 Asus Eee PCs – Engadget

Students in California’s Fresno Unified school district have a little something to be excited about this week, as officials have just invested $650,000 in 1,000 Asus Eee PCs, set for classroom deployment over the next few weeks. The concept is to use the miniscule laptops alongside good, old-fashioned textbooks, with each student being given the chance to create a “digital portfolio” of essays, drawings, and whatever else they can get away with. The computers will remain in roughly 60 classrooms, and will be shared by students.

  1. I interested to hear how you get on with these Jim.

We are scheduled to trial five machines in EL here. Do you know if they will be able to host CrazyTalk?

This is something that we have been pondering.

    :-)
